| The Black Russian is an AK47 x BlackBerry hybrid The BlackBerry, mum of this hybrid, is being utilized under an exclusive partnership with the originator; SomAblazE. Not to be confused with Vancouver Island Seed Co.'s BlackBerry ("...cross of The Black and Afghani"), this is a one-of-a-kind Northern Californian bagseed find and exists only in clone form. This unique phenotype exhibits intense anthocyanin expression in the form of a deep dark purple, bordering on black, colour on 100% of it's calyxes (even nodal) under all but the most extremes in high temperatures from the start of flowering through harvest. The Blackberry's taste is as unique as it's appearance, with scents all in the'high-note' range, tip of the tongue, if you will. There are no earthy, musky tones at all but, rather, elements of violets and opium with a slight antiseptic note. Even the trichomes of the Blackberry are purple, which makes extracting bubble hash a rewarding process as both the water and the hash end up purple. The father is also one I've been working with from the original 'Cherry' pheno AK47 (circa '2000). The Cherry AK47 is an extremely stocky, dense, and majorly yielding phenotype. The scent of nugs produced are of a luscious Black Cherry/Plum Liqour with coffee/chocolate undertones (very rich). The potency is also very intense, yet very balanced. |

| With the Black Russian, the goal was to remedy the cons of the BlackBerry (yield, density, and structure) from the phenomenal Cherry AK47 pheno, while retaining the amazing anthocynanin expression of the BlackBerry. Tests have shown some limited success in this initial hybridization with a significant degree of variance in phenotypical expression along the scale between the parentage, most evident by growth pattern. Phenotypes will range from tall and branchy to short and stocky. Anthocyanin expression is more susceptible to heat and a lighter, less dramatic shade of purple when compared to the BlackBerry. Purpling varied from significant to trace at a ratio of ~ 70%/30%. Bud density and yields were improved, but not near matching that of the Cherry AK47. The scent and potency/ profile are very consistent across all phenos. The scent is extremely unique and appealing, very floral with just a touch of the eartheness from the Cherry AK47 and none of the antiseptic quality from the Blackberry. A fascinating combination of geraniums and raw cocoa beans is the general scent/taste consensus. The high is of above average potency and very clear. Commercial viability will be best among those preferring sativa bud formations and very boutique cultivars. |
