Breeder's Description - 'Northern Light Special The Original'

Short, sweet and fast, this internationally influential strain has a smooth, spicey-to-peppery taste and an indica growing habit that assures nice yields and minimal headaches for trouble-free cultivation. Nice head effects with the warm glow of a relaxing body stone. A uniquely contemplative smoke for such an overwhelmingly indica-dominant hybrid.

KC Brains Northern Lights Special was a very easy plant to grow, not picky about fertilizers, fast stretchy growth. Although I was expecting an Indica type plant, all 5 of the NLS I grew were Sativa in appearance - tall, with narrow long fingered leaves.

The NLS were flowered for 9 weeks. They did not produce noticable trichomes, and were not very sticky during manicure. The buds were long and fluffy, and so the dried yeild was low/moderate at 2.4 oz for 2 female plants. The Skunks grown next to the NLS produced 3.7 oz.

Unfortunately, the smoke of the NLS was weak as expected. It's difficult to smoke enough to get a nice high, so I don't smoke the NLS. Consequently, I've been using the buds to make hash oil for cannabrownies, which have turned out nicely.

I would not grow this strain, it's not worth the effort or the space in your garden.

Northern Lights Special was my first name-brand grow. I planted just two seeds, and one turned out male. Topped at the fourth node and started tying down branches to nails in the wall. Plant ended up about 2 feet high and 4 feet wide, taking up the entire closet. It really started stinking up the house the last weeks before harvest. Buds were dark green and literally glistening with crystals. Everyone definitely knows when you open up a jar of these nugs. With a yield of 5.5 ounces I think I came out pretty good, considering the quality. I'll have a lot to smoke for a long time. There is an issue of High Times that gave this strain "Strain of the month" and I can definitely see why.

Very easy to grow and cheap, good for a beginners first grow, wasn?t too impressed with the taste but it gave me a giggle in the head high which was half decent I suppose. Grow along side a Big Bud Super Skunk, it yielded just the same as that so I go a reasonable harvest off it. It was grown under a 250w HPS but have since got a 400w.

Out of 10 seeds 1 germinated, and turned out a Sativa dominant female. I veged for 7 weeks. I found I had to feed this plant higher amounts of Nitrogen than other strains during the first few weeks of flowering. This strain is more suited for big light or outdoors.

I found this strain nothing like NL and more like a Haze. The buds have a low bag appeal and a smell I find unpleasant, the smoke tastes like it smells with a hint of pine.

What I did like about this strain was that it's easy on the lungs and had a wonderful up high, that lasts for hours.

As my first grow with decent genetics, I was very impressed with this strain. I know that KC Brains' seeds get a lot of flak on these boards - but these seeds all sprouted and popped out the soil (planted directly into soil) within 36hrs, but the last two to sprout got chucked.

Of the remaining 8 plants, they were as close to identical as you can get, all were leaning towards the Indica side and grew to be short, squat little bushes with loads of sidebranches.

When the plants were around 10" tall, I fitted them with Scrog screens and took cuttings - the cuttings were put aside to root and I flowered the mums (& dads) to determine sex and to get some samples so as I could choose a mother.

Most of the way through, there were few, if any problems. Most of the time it was a case of overwatering - and this caught up with me later in flower as I had pH issues and nute lockout, causing excessive yellowing and 'crispy' leaves.

From the 8 plants, I got 5 females (all the males were axed immediately) which I continued to flower until harvesting at 62 days (the plants were slightly immature when put under 12/12, so this would affect the flowering time)

After drying, I had just under 8.5 Oz from the 5 ladies - the most from one plant was 49g (most were over 40g), and the least was 17g (due to it being finished in a 500ml pot - I called it 'lanky')

These buds are totally covered in trichs (nice fat ones that look like sugar) and are sticky as hell. When you open the jar, you get a heady, pungent fruity aroma which reminds me of some Neville's haze I tried a while back. The buds are a little loose on occasion, but most are quite firm - obviously, this would improve with more light.

The high does vary *slightly* from one plant to the next - but as yet, I'm still trying to decide which mother to keep (I like 'em all too much!). Overall, it's a more heady stone with a bit of couchlock - so it'll leave you still capable of demolishing the contents of the fridge (and trust me, you will with this stuff - talk about munchies madness) and quite a few visuals - this is one of the 'trippiest' strains I've tried (I didn't even find the Neville's that trippy). The high also lasts for hours - so don't smoke this stuff if you've got things to do.

I would recommend this strain to anyone - experienced or not as it's easy to grow, is very tolerant and yields well with a good level of potency.
